Catalyxx has secured a €20 million European Union grant through RenewChem, a flagship project selected by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking. The funding will support construction of the company’s first commercial bio-based chemicals plant in Europe and marks a step forward in its shift from technology demonstration to commercial deployment.

The company is leading a consortium that includes Arkema and Evonik as part of RenewChem, which is focused on scaling the industrial production of bio-based alcohols from ethanol. Catalyxx develops technology that converts ethanol into butanol, hexanol, and higher alcohol blends used across the chemical value chain.

The award comes as Europe’s chemicals sector faces pressure to cut emissions while maintaining industrial competitiveness and supply resilience. For Catalyxx, the grant provides public backing for a commercial-scale effort to produce drop-in alternatives to fossil-based chemicals using renewable feedstocks.
