Italy-based fintech startup Smartwage has raised €2 million in pre-seed funding to develop its corporate welfare management platform, which turns employee benefits into a flexible digital wallet using regulated payment tools and artificial intelligence.

The round was led by Step Fund, with participation from Zest. The company said the new capital will be used to strengthen its architecture and security, refine its AI systems, further develop the platform, and improve app functionality for both employees and businesses.

Smartwage is building in the growing market for digitised employee benefits, where companies are looking for more flexible and manageable welfare tools. The funding marks an early step for the startup as it looks to scale its product in Italy.
