Lactalis has finalised its acquisition of Protein Works, a Liverpool-based active nutrition company, as the French dairy group moves to deepen its presence in the health and wellness market.

Founded in 2012, Protein Works develops and sells protein shakes, meal replacements, wellness supplements and snacks. The company has built its business through a direct-to-consumer model and manufactures products from its Liverpool facility.

The deal gives Lactalis a stronger foothold in the active nutrition category, an area of growing demand as established food groups look to broaden their nutritional product portfolios. Lactalis said the acquisition will add Protein Works’ expertise, digital capabilities and brand presence to its existing nutrition business.

Protein Works employs 150 people, who joined the Lactalis Group on June 1. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
