French AI company Mistral AI said on May 19 that it has acquired Vienna-based Emmi AI for an undisclosed amount, adding specialist technology focused on complex physics problems such as airflow, heat transfer and material stress.
The deal points to Mistral’s growing interest in industrial applications, an area many AI companies have yet to address in depth. By bringing in Emmi AI’s simulation expertise, Mistral is positioning itself more directly in engineering and manufacturing, where digital twins, computer-aided engineering and workflow automation are becoming more strategically important.
The acquisition also reflects a broader European push to strengthen domestic industrial technology and reduce reliance on U.S. and Chinese providers. Emmi AI had previously raised 15 million euros in what was described as Austria’s largest funding round of 2025.
Emmi AI said its mission remains unchanged, but that joining Mistral gives it greater scientific resources, compute capacity and access to enterprise customers. The company also said it plans to open a Mistral office in Linz, expanding the group’s footprint in Austria.
