The round was led by Oxford Science Enterprises and Empirical Ventures, with participation from existing investors Zero Carbon Capital and Creator Fund.
Founded in 2024 as Porpoise Power by Professor Adrian Thomas, Hilary Struthers, and John Kennedy, Caudal Energy is a spin-off from the University of Oxford. The company is developing a predictable renewable power system based on tidal flow, using a proprietary oscillating foil design inspired by the caudal fins of marine mammals.
The funding will be used to expand engineering and modelling capabilities, advance demonstration and deployment activities, and support commercial partnerships across utility, industrial and distributed energy markets.
The raise comes as interest grows in renewable power technologies that can offer more predictable generation alongside wind and solar, with tidal energy attracting renewed attention for its potential role in future energy systems.
